Why hardware matters
Any app that stores private keys on the device running it — whether that's your phone or laptop — is exposed to the internet. Malware, phishing, and remote exploits can reach software wallets. Your bitcoin wallet private keys are only as safe as your operating system.
Ledger solves this by moving the private keys off your computer entirely. The ledger wallet app on your phone or ledger live desktop on your computer handles the interface. The hardware device handles the signing. The two communicate, but the keys never cross the boundary into your internet-connected machine.
This design means every transaction you make through the ledger app — buying, swapping, staking, connecting to a dApp — must be physically approved on a device that has never touched the internet. That's a fundamentally different security model to anything available in software alone.
Download the app, then add a hardware device when you're ready. Available on all platforms — desktop and mobile.
